hello world
and it continues where i left you, bonda and dee leaving india for a new part of the world, hoping to have more encounters with animals, meeting more cool people, seeing more places and cultures and much more: africa is calling.
we flew to kenya, specially for going on safari in masai mara.we of course had not booked a thing, except for a few nights in a backpackers at the beach in mtwapa, a small town next to mombasa. just before we left india i also read that we were arriving exactly at the time of the elections in kenya, which went terribly wrong four years ago. so once we reached this backpacker place the people there also advised us to relax and keep a low profile for the time of the elections.
so here we were, stuck in this mtwapa, in a beach hut with no electric power or anything. and the place was empty. normally there are loads of people there, but, due to the elections and the warnings all countries had been putting out, it was only us, a girl doing some voluntary work and then there was mario, an italian guy whom we spent a lot of time with. we did fuck all... got up, had something to eat, relaxed at the beach, played cards, drank beer, got coconuts from the trees and opened them for snacks, took walks to the small town where there was a small amount of tourists, mainly older germans looking for some young african ass, and made fun of them.
and that was about all we did... we even got so bored we had out hair braided into lines, and one time we went for a swim and i dropped my iphone in the sea.... luckily it worked after drying for three days in the african sun. and the sun was hot... sooooooo freakin' hot. we were behaving like cats, just sitting around in the shade doing nothing. but it was fun! and a good rest after india :-)
there was one thing we did do though. we organised a safari and got an awesome deal. it was a private safari, meaning only bonda, me and a driver in a big safari vehicle with a pop up roof, transport to nairobi, all accommodation and food included. it was great.
we left our backpackers, which we loved by then and all their friendly staff behind us and went to nairobi by bus. regarding the elections... nothing had happened anywhere. meh.
after a night in nairobi we and leonhard our driver set off to lake nakuru. that is a beautiful place, full of flamingos and other birds, baboons, all kind of gazelle things and buffaloes and... wait for it... rhinos! i can still not believe how close we could get to these huge animals. they were just relaxing and we were totally psyched. bonda also made friends with a whole baboon family... what can i say? she just gets the animals and they get her. it was amazing to watch. check the pictures after.
after that we went to the legendary masai mara. this was great. also here we could get such a close look at the animals. after rhino and buffalo at lake nakuru we completed the so called big five by spotting lions, elephants and (luck us once again) a leopard. bloody awesome. besides that we saw many kinds of birds, pigs, crocodiles, hippos, a cheetah, giraffes, more monkeys and and and... i was just great. we slept in a nice tent and spent three days game driving around. not much more to say... just look at the pictures.
after that we left kenya from nairobi, via johannesburg to cape town, where we still are, luckily, since we almost missed our flight in nairobi cause we were playing cards next to the gate instead of bording the plane. thanks to bondas doggy eye look and the only male worker at the gate we got on anyway.
here in cape town we now have spent almost 2 months. the plan was to just relax, stay in one place, have a nice time and shake off the travel tiredness. we also thought we might get some work for a moth or so, but didn't. we succeeded in everything else though. we are staying in a house that belongs to paul, a fiend of my dad. it is absolutely brilliant. is has bedrooms (yes, plural), bathrooms (also plural), a lounge, fireplace and a kitchen! we bought so much food and i cooked and cooked. it felt so good to prepare the own meals after seven months of street food, restaurants and god knows what.
we went on a few small trips. we went to knysna for a couple of days to visit my godparents who were there by chance. on the way there we spent a night in a tent outside ronnie's sex shop... that was fun. haha. well it isn't a sex shop. it was suppose to be ronnie's shop (in the middle of nowhere) and a mate just put a "sex" in the middle and people started stopping... so ronnie opened a bar. brilliant!
it was nice spending time with steve and esthi in knysna. i enjoyed that. by chance there were quite a few people i know from switzerland in knysna and we had a great time with them. on the way back to cape town we spent a night at the most southern point of africa.
we also did an other trip to cederberg, a bush area, pure nature. it was awesome. 13 years ago i was there for the millennium with my family and my mate kep. it was fun revisiting a place like that. we just slept in our tent on a campsite and cooked anything we had over the fire. that was really fun. also exploring the area, climbing around on rocks, jumping into pools, tasting wine and so on. that was really good, but it still felt nice to sleep in a real bed back in cape town after 4or 5 nights in a tent with no mat... but it was totally worth it.
the rest of the time in cape town we just went to places in town, beaches, the cape of good hope and cape point. we also met sunil and gareth aka sunny and barney with whom we had a few very awesome nights.
this time right now was very good for us. we needed this timeout from travelling and are now ready for more... and in a few days it's on: SOUTH AMERICA HERE WE COME!!!
